positive energy Greenpeace welcomes announcements
in the government's Energy White Paper.
Stephen Tindale, Director of Greenpeace UK said, "Greenpeace
welcomes the fact that despite strong pro-nuclear voices in
the Cabinet this White Paper clearly concludes that the nuclear
industry is the energy of the past and there's no justification
for providing policy and cash incentives to build new stations.
The government's commitment to a 60% carbon cut by 2050 and
the unveiling of a strategy to achieve that is very good news
for the public and the environment. Meeting these targets
by developing clean renewable energy will be much easier now
the government has removed the expensive distraction of nuclear
power."
He continued, "However we are concerned that a firm 2020
target for renewable energy has been removed from the White
Paper. There is a renewable energy revolution going on across
Europe, created by strong leadership from Governments. The
UK renewable energy industry is champing at the bit to join
this revolution and bring new investment and jobs to Britain.
To make this happen investors and developers needed the government
to make a clear long-term commitment to the renewable industry,
by setting a clear target."
The crucial factor now is to make sure that renewable proves
itself as economic and effective over the next few years ...
to keep that nuclear industry at bay!
